Last chance Uluru climb could spark tourist rush
July 10th, 2009
THE Northern Territory could soon be swamped with tourists rushing for their last chance to climb Uluru before it is banned.
Readers from around the country have responded to yesterday's revelation that the Federal Government was considering a plan to ban people from climbing the rock.
The proposal is out for public consultation and - if adopted - is unlikely to come into effect until the end of next year.
Many tourists have seized this announcement as an opportunity for a "last chance" to climb Uluru - sparking speculation of a tourism "mini-boom".
News Limited's national website news.com.au was swamped with comments yesterday.
Mary from West Perth suggested people who have it on their "bucket list" should come to the Northern Territory as soon as possible.
"Do it now, I'll say".
Another reader from the ACT said he thought there should be restrictions instead of a ban.
Tourism NT Chief Executive Maree Tetlow said she was aware of social networking websites covering this issue and was "monitoring online comments".
"Like many in the NT and Australian tourism industry, we do not promote the climb out of respect for the law and culture of the Traditional Owners," she said.
Ms Tetlow said many visitors now chose not to climb Uluru.

the mikiverse loves free speech and wholeheartedley accepts, that someone who is diametrically opposed to my views is free to promulgate those thoughts...However, misogyny, racism, intolerance etc will see that comment deleted.
These abstract considerations will be solely, and exclusively determined by the mikiverse, so play hard, but, nice.
