BROADMEADOWS police have had so much success with a new licence plate recognition system that Queensland police want to snaffle the technology.
Officers from the Queensland Police state traffic support branch visited Broadmeadows for a demonstration last week.
In November Hume police began using an Automotive Number Plate Recognition unit which can process about 3000 cars in moving traffic each hour.
Hume Sgt Darren Hudson said the technology scanned information about a vehicle, the listed owner and alerted officers to any outstanding warrants within seconds.
“It’s a very useful tool in scanning traffic and detecting offenders that warrant interception,” Sgt Hudson said.
Visiting Sen-Sgt Ross Maltby said a Queensland inquiry into improving road safety identified the technology as a possible solution, and had received a submission from Victoria Police that it was already in use.
“We’re here fact finding and I have to say I’m very impressed with the set-up,” he said. “Clearly they’re achieving positive results here with the technology.”
The Queensland officers saw a demonstration of the technology on Pascoe Vale Rd, Broadmeadows, last Thursday afternoon. During the demonstration 12 offenders were caught within that hour.
